Anticipatory Guidance
Anticipatory Guidance is essentially informing parents and patients about outcomes and events that may occur in the ensuing 6 months before their next regular recall visit. Dentists are trained to have the theoretical and practical knowledge to identify the presence and onset of disease and differentiate that from normal growth and development milestones.
Anticipatory Guidance may be information about a potential normal milestone so the parent can be forewarned and not anxious if and when it occurs. On other occasions, Anticipatory guidance may be information about what to look for as possible pathology so a condition can be reexamined. The goal in our office is not to just present where a child is a specific point in time, but to predict what might be needed in the future, be it the timing of orthodontics, the sequence of tooth loss or a myriad of other factors.
Anticipatory Guidance is part of every regular dental check-up. There may still be questions about a variety of subjects between dental examinations and we encourage our parents to call if and when questions arise.
