little-girl-brushingSystem Fluoride

Fluoride is one of the many essential building blocks that a growing child with developing teeth needs in order to form and maintain healthy teeth. The Metropolitan Water District (MWD) now adds the very small correct concentration of fluoride to our drinking water. For children who do not drink tap water or use certain types of filtering devices, fluoride may be prescribed in tablet form to obtain the same benefit to the teeth as those who drink fluoride water.

  • It helps to remineralize teeth that have lost essential elements; mainly calcium. Demineralization, the loss of minerals in tooth enamel, occurs in everyone’s mouth. As teeth lose minerals, the enamel becomes weaker and eventually a cavity occurs. Teeth that initially grow in the presence of optimal fluoride are more resistant to demineralization and thus fewer cavities are possible.
  • For a young child, fluoride may be ingested so that it strengthens the developing teeth even before they erupt into the mouth. By incorporating Fluoride in their development, you make sure to supply the teeth with much needed fluoride that will make them much stronger and much more prepared to resist cavities once they emerge into the mouth.
  • Even the teeth of your older children who already have their teeth will find systemic fluoride beneficial. Research has shown that optimal amounts of ingested fluoride will result in a slightly higher fluoride concentration in saliva and thus fluoride is available to nourish the teeth.
  • Supplying the teeth with optimal amounts of systemic and topical fluoride makes the teeth strong and better able to resist the cavity process. This means less cavities, fewer needed fillings and less cost for dental care!

Water fluoridation is the controlled addition of fluoride into the water system. In Orange County, the MWD has added fluoride to our water supply for the past 5 or 6 years. Unfortunately, fluoride in tap water is lost with home reverse osmosis systems (not with carbon filters such a Brita filters) and for those families with reverse osmosis systems, other methods are needed to ensure the optimal amount of fluoride ingestion. Your dentist can help you determine the best way to make certain your children are gaining the most benefit from fluoride usage.
